Improper air gap will cause poor spark, but not complete loss of spark unless it is a mile off. .010 is about right. Do you have a multimeter that can accurately measure less than an ohm? If you do, connect it between the armature plate and the coil wire connection on the points. Leave the coil & condenser connected also. Then observe the resistance as you turn the shaft (remove the round magnet first--otherwise you will get funky readings). It should be around an ohm when the points are open and zero when they are closed. If it does not meet these tests, your points either are not clean or they are shorted...or the coil primary is bad, which is rare. But don't be fooled by a meter that can't read such low resistances.
