Hey, i am considering placing a redundant tilt switch on the outboard and splicing into the harness. Mostly because i think it might be handy at the ramp and when servicing.

any concerns with doing this ? Any major advantages im not thinking of?

It is pretty handy to have one of those, when standing on the ground next to the boat.

Usually the wiring harness has bullet connectors. You could make up some "Y" bullet connectors and make your splicing look pretty professional. Use a heavy duty rocker or toggle switch, so it doesn't burn out. You probably need a 5A one.

What outboard? It might be easier to mount a switch on the side of the splashwell depending on the motor.

Well-------Perhaps it has not happened yet.----These easy to find trim switches on the lower cowling can be operated by the kids.----These units will not stop for fingers.-------One day there may be a law suit I think.

Good point, but the key would still have to be in the ignition and "on" right?

NO not at all.----No point of having this switch there if you still have to climb in the boat to turn the key.

Oh, right! All things considered, i dont need my kids screwing around and crushing their body parts. Any thoughts on some kind of lockout? Maybe locate the switch up high out of reach? Maybe the splashwell as suggested earlier would be kind of out of reach of children?

The new Merc 4-strokes with TNT all have a second switch on the engine cowling as std. equipment.

Gee, even my '93 Merc has a switch on the cowling. On most boats, on trailers, the switch on the lower cowling is still pretty high off the ground. If a kid is that tall, and still dumb enough to catch his finger, you have other problems.

My kids became "boatmen" when they were still in diapers. Thus, they are well acquainted. Nevertheless, your quote made my day.
