Buying new century 2102 in two weeks. I have to make a decision B/T the Yamaha F225 or the 200HPDI. Dealer make a point about the 200HPDI giving me a better hole shot in shallow water. Gas millage is roughly the same B/T the two motors. Anybody has any comment on why I should go with the 200HPDI over the F225.

Hi,

If it is a 2007 or 2008 F225 I would select that. It has some enhancements that was first in F250 that HPDI do not have. And I do not think 200 HPDI is Commandlink compatible (but I could be wrong).
Better second hand value also on F225.

The only useful comment I can add - not having any experience with the F225, or any four strokes for that matter - is that the 200hpdi is one sweet motor. I have full confidence in mine and it jumps the 22' Pathfinder on to plane in no time at all.

Good luck in your decision!

I think I would go w/the 4stroke engine. We have Seasports mfg here and Boondocks Marine sales service, (also a Yamaha dealership) which are the same company and I have not seen them put a 2 stroke engine on any of their boats in about 2 years now. Either they know something we don't or they just like the 4 stroke engines. They also sell a line of metal boats and still use the 4 strokes on them also. Makes me wonder if Yamaha is about to quit making 2 stroke engines.

One interesting thing is that Yamaha in Europe do not advertise HPDI on their website anymore. On US website they (still) do that.
I have read that Yamaha have decided to not make their 2-stroke HPDI outboards comply to the stricter environmental regulations (EU) that are in effect now in here in Europe. I belive it has to do with noice levels this time:
0 - 13 hp outboard: 67 dBA
13 – 54 hp outboard: 72 dBA
Over 54 hp outboard: 75 dBA
(at when RPM and at what distance I do not know).

So they sell only 4-strokes now here in Europe as far as I know.
I do not know if you in US will get similar environment regulations that prevent new HPDI to be sold but if that would happen the second hand value of a HPDI could be lower.

Also, ordinary 2-strokes (with carburators) was not allowed to be sold new here in Europe already in 2007.

Good luck,
Bo
