Hello, <br /> I have a small 14 foot fiberglass boat thats grossly underpowered with a 6 horse johnson. I have a chance to buy for 200 bucks, a merc 20 horse. I think the dude selling it may be illiterate, or drunk, but when i asked him about it,(by e-mail, )this was the mail i sent him, <br />"Hi<br /> I may be interested in your ourboard motor. What make/model is it, and what needs to be done to make it runnable?.. thanks.."<br /> and this was the reply <br />"the lower unit needs a water pump and a o ring the shaft that goes into the motor the splines arnt very good but i had it since new took real good care of it and the motor runs great it is a blue 200 merc 20 horse. thanks mike ", <br /> And finally, this was the ad he placed to sell it.."20 hp electric start, with controls runs real good, lower unit needs work.200.00 or trade"<br /> Anyone think this would be worth the trouble?>> Thanx, Scott

Sounds OK to me..... Water pump impeller $20.00 , o-ring $1.00 . Go check it out.

Re: to buy, or not to buy..

Buyer beware!!! Many of the older mercs of that size had a unique transmission design which was very hard to repair. If your motor is indeed on of these engines putting in an impeller will be difficult because the impeller was not located on the top of the lower unit. It was located half way up the midsection. To remove the impeller you need to have a special tool to remove the bearing retainer which lies below the impeller. If you know the year, please post as it will help determine whether the engine has the weird transmission.
