Howdy! I’ve asked several questions here ‘bout my “new” 1983 90 hp evinrude. Got another one (or two, or….). I bought this motor with the understanding that it was running when the mechanic took it off because the transom was rotted. Wound up sitting outside for two years with the cover on. Looks to me like the first year dirt dobbers nests got rained on and melted and last years nests were all still intact when I picked her up a week ago. I’ve got her on a motor lift and dried out. Poked most of the remaining nests and blew off with air and used a shop vac. Still not happy. Little nervous ‘bout hosing her down but yet don’t want that remaining crud sucked in when I crank her up. I haven’t yet bought the replacement parts (plugs, impellor, thermostat, etc). how can I safely clean her up?

Thanks for taking time to respond!

Re: to clean or not too clean?

The only real worrries are not to use too harsh of a cleaner, and keep water from running into the carbs. That's easiest by simply trimming the motor so water will run out of them rather than into them, and cover the intake box with a plastic bag. Make sure no water collected in the intake box before trimming back down. They're made for a wet environment, so hose away. :)
