To glass or not to glass. Advice needed please.

Gang,

I have the carpet ripped out of my boat, and am removing the fun carpet adhesive. Where the sides of the boat meet the deck are fibreglasses with very rough mesh glass. (Not very smooth surface at all) My deck plywood is in good condition but will require some filler in a few areas to level off. (Has some knots with depressions and other blemishes) My plan is to paint the deck with Durabak and install snap-in binded carpet. I would like the deck to look nice w/o the carpet, and since I?m painting with Durabak (textured) the paint should cover minor imperfections. So I?m curious if I should glass the entire floor using 1-2 layers of 1.5 or 2.0 mesh and poly resin? Or just use some sort of filler, sand voids listed above, prep and paint? I?ve never glassed before but now have read much of the? How to Fiberglass? thread, and feel I can do a decent job? I need some advice please?

Thanks in advance!

Ok Im corNfused ? you have a fiberglass boat with plain plywood floor , no glass on top of floor already ?
If this is the case .. and you didn't do it your self, then this was someones attempt to half *ss repair a rotted floor.

Pictures would help, but if it doesn't already have glass covering the floor, yes you need glass over it to say the least .. but if no glass on it now is prob pressure treated plywood, and glass aint never gonna stick to this if its even slightly damp.

The floor is factory for sure... No rot at all... I'm very lucky.

Looks like they used a chopper gun to spray the glass from the sides of the hull, to about 5-10" of the decking. Then sprayed the entire thing with grey gel coat. Again thicker on the sides, and thinning toward the center of the deck. No pretty finish work at all, just a cheap prep for the boats adhesive and carpet. It looks as if I'll be laying some glass down regardless, as I've ground my way through some thin seems and such. So most likely I'll put a poly resin layer, some mat, some poly, get surfaces relatively smooth, and cover the works with Durabak. Pics and all remaining posts will be here.

PS. I jumped the gun asking this advice, and just needed to get cracking on the boat. Soon the reality of what really was needed, revealed itself. I'll try and do more research before starting redundant threads. Sometimes I just like to type out loud, in hopes one of my cyber pals will have the answer, or at least advise. :)

I found the actual doing took less time than the talking about it.

Yeah...

I'm kinda slow at getting that concept sometimes.
