To lap or not to lap?

Flywheel taper on a 93' 225 Johnson. Its hard to tell between rust that matters and just staining. the taper and inside the flywheel are very smooth, but since I take this motor 30+ miles offshore, do you think a lap is in order or not? As long as its clean and dry (i use alchohol as a final wipe) the manual says good to go, but nothing about staining/rust. Thanks!

Lap the tapers together with fine valve grinding compound.----The key locates the flywheel for proper timing.----The flywheel is driven by the locking tapers !

yes thank you, Racer. I know the function was just asking what is acceptable when staining/rust is concerned. I guess if it's able to stain/rust the taper, it means they weren't lapped together sufficiently to begin with (this motor I rebuilt in 2007.... 1,283 hrs later). stator had the dreaded ooze, sticking the timer base.
