Can too much stabil in the gas prevent a 40 HP 2 cycle outboard from starting? I am talking about enough stabil for 6 gallons in 1/2 gallons of gas.

Easy way to find out, replace the contaminatd gas. You might give it a squirt of premix in the carb to see if it fires first.

Just thin out the ratio by adding more gas...

I have replaced the gas but the engine is in storage and I have been unable to see if it will start now. Just curious if too much stabil could be the reason for not starting (the Merc is an 2003) and had been running fine all season.

I would not think too much stabil is the reason for not starting. Clean the spark plug, and pull the starter cord with the plug grounded and see if there is any spark. Spary a "small shot" of gas in the plug hole and see of it will fire, if in fact you have spark and it tries to start, the Next suspect would be a plugged carb jet. Might have to clean the carb out real good.

If too much Stabil is the problem you'll have to at least drain the carburetors before fresh gas will work.Stabil has to be flammable though.Or you couldn't run you motor for 10 minutes on it,without the motor stalling or something.
If we are talking 3 ounces in 64 ounces of gas,I'd say that's not the problem.

DHP
