working on 1989 70 hp Evinrude for friend of mine. I am experienced and have never had this problem before and cannot seem to cure it. I have a steady stream of water 6-8 inches out of idle relief ports. I have resealed everything...adapter housing, powerhead..new water pump..inspected tuner and block..no cracks Motor runs great but it should not have this water flow...anyone had this problem??

I suspect you are refering to the exhaust relief ports at the upper rear of the engines mid-section.You should only get water relief out of those when the engine is in water and above 3000 rpm.Is there a T/stat assy. installed on this engine? What is the condition of the inner exhaust baffle rubber gaskets?

hello
sometime in the 80's the tstat assy got changed from a single tstat with two pressure valves to a single t-stat/valve assy. somewhere along the line your pressure relief valve appears to be leaking or a spring or t-stat seat is missing.
good luck and keep posting
