Hello,
Do the experts in this forum reccomend that the fuel line be disconnected and the fuel be run out until the motor dies? (non oil injected engines) Or should one strictly use a fuel stabilizer and leave the carbs full? Or what?
Thanks in advance,
Little Bear

Hi Little bear.
As you know there are many opinions on this subject. My opinion is that it depends. If you have a small portable and carry it in the trunk of your car? By all means run all fuel out. I also use fuel stabilizer in mounted tanks. If I am going to put a motor up for a while, I fog it and then drain the carbs.I think the only sure fire way to keep your fuel system in good shape is routine maintance. I guess I didn't help much.Anyway good luck, enjoy.

Lttle_Bear is right. Run the portables out.

Larger engines, especially with oil injection, are another matter. Just keep the fuel treated.

Alcan, you've used a term I'm not familiar with. What did you mean when you said "when you set an engine up for a while....that you fog it." ??

Efhenry, what alcan meant was to use a storage product, known as "fogging" oil. It is sprayed into the intake of a running motor to protect the crankshaft and bearings during prolonged storage. Also, remove the spark plug(s) and give it a good shot while slowly pulling the motor over. Keeps the rust off of the sensitive parts!

Thanks, Fouled Plug, I don't ever need to do that, my engine never gets to rest that long. Once hunting season is over its back on duty fishin.

Here's the best advice I can give, a single carburated small engine can be run dry, kill it as soon as it revs up right before it's out of fuel. When the fuel runs out so does the lubrication. Multi carbed engines may keep running while one carb is empy (not being lubricated), treat the fuel don't run these dry.
