New here and have a question about making a steering setup for my boat. First my boat is a 14 ft. v-bottom with a 5.5 Evinrude Fisherman Now here is what i'm thinking I would like to make something where I could run my boat without reaching behind me. My boat is to narrow and short to make some sort of console to mount steering as this would take up to much of my fishing gear place unless I mount it to the side some how? Has anybody ever made something for your own or know where I can get some ideas to build one? Thanks for any Info.

Crash,

If your objective is to simply get out of the back of the boat, there are tiller extension arms availble. Take a look at Cabelas. www.cabelas.com.

If you do not like the tiller steering, some kind of console (side) is going to be necessary.

It doesn't have to be very big. You can easily make one out of 1/2" plywood.

The steering wheel, cable and steering head will set you back some. Check out ebay.

The motor control box and cables may be a little harder to find. Again, I suggest a search on ebay.

There's also a single lever steering that mounts on the gunwale. You push the stick forward to turn one way (left I think) and pull back to turn the other way.

c/6

Hooty

Re: To steer or not to steer

i had a 14ft. jon boat once that was rigged up with a home-made stick steer set-up...find something for a handle, and get some coated cable, pulleys, and mounts and go9 to it...not too difficult to figure out...my set-up work pretty good..
