That is the question. I have a aluminum 16' jon boat w/a 6hp 2 stroke engine. I was considering buying a trolling motor for it becasue im going to to be fishing in it...A LOT. And i need a backup motor in case the old 'rude acts up.

Thanks

Re: to troll or not to troll..

I hate to break it to you , but , you allready have the trolling motor (6HP 'Rude ) . :D
What you need is a main motor , as I am sure that 16' jon is rated for a wee more than 6 ponies . ;)

You should be looking for a 30-40 HP motor , check the manufacturers plate to find the max. rating .
Johny/Rudes are a good bet , as you allready have the tank and fittings , no point having to carry a seperate tank/hose for 2 different brands .

Also , consider an electric , 45-55 Lbs thrust bow mount , foot control is a plus if it fits your style of fishing .

What kind of waters are you fishing , and , what fish are you after ?

Heck yeah!

A trolling motor will be perfect for your jon boat. Bow or transom mount, choose which is better for your fishing style.

I have a 44# transom mount on my 14' jon boat and have had trips where I didn't even use the outboard,,, and covered at least 15 miles trolling. My narrow jon boat seems too unstable for a bow mount while stand up fishing (my preference) but I have a 80# bow mount on my 16.5' Seaswirl which is good for the heavy boat.

Ya, go with a troller, had a similar set up on a 14' jon and used the troller all the time.
Some time you just don't want to fire up the motor, can't lose.

Re: to troll or not to troll..

i asked in the other forum what year is it. or model # so we can determine what it is. a picture of the combo would help a lot also.

you can up load to a free service like photobucket.com then you choose the pictures you want( clik the little box at the bottom left of the picture) scrool to the bottom of the page, clik generate html, it will take you to the next page, scroll down to thumb nails clik on that and copy, then insert it into your post.

also if you are planing on posting pictures, you can use the Blue post reply or the go advanced, manage attachments, there you can upload , directly from your computer. besure you pictures have been resized to fit the format

Craiglist, eBay, iboats, newspapers and closeout sales have good prices. All you need to know is, do you want:

1) gas or electric?
2) remote or tiller?
3) how much power?
4) used or new?
5) how much you want to spend?

With those questions answered, someone here can give you an opinion.

Re: to troll or not to troll..

I want a electric troller. Doesnt matter if it is remote or tiller whichever one is cheaper. Needs to be freshwater. Must have enough power to push my 14' jon.( It is not a 16' i checked the other day) And i want to spend less than $200. i found a minn-kota on iboats that would be perfect but they are out of stock. Any suggestions?
