I recently accuired an 86 19ft hydra sport with a 86 GT 150 on it. The boat sat for approx. 5 years. I was told that sense it sat so long to go ahead and unhook the vro and just mix it. Any input?

I'd update the pump to the new OMS pump and let it do it's job. I wouldn't have an outboard without oil injection.

yep, fully agree, the only people who say to disconnect it, either have no idea or have a bad mechanic.

well i think the main concern with leaving it connected, was the fact that it has set for almost 5 years. wouldn't it be alot safer, not to mention cheaper to disconnect and pre-mix? rather than to replace the old pump with a new one, replace lines, maybe even wiring?

sounds to me like you have convinced yourself to disconnect it, you have got resounding "leave it on" answers, so take yes for an answer and get it reapired/checked! or do it your way and disconnect it and put up with smoke and mixing for the rest of your time you own it.

As long as the oil pump is maintained and working then they are great. Ignore it and you are asking for trouble.

I also have to agree- have your dealer put on the OMS pump upgrade and then forget about it.

People have found it far too easy to blame the VRO for any problem that comes along. Burn down? Must be the VRO. Poor compression? Must be the VRO. Plug fouling? Must be the VRO.

In reality, it is usually a neglectful owner that is the root cause of the problem. (Example- clogged jets due to varnish in the carbs)

Yes, there were some early VRO's that were more susceptable to problems, but versions in the last several years have been good. The newest version/ OMS pump has been rock solid.
