To VRO or Not VRO...

Me again. As for this 40hp Evinrude that Ive got with my new boat:
The motor has a separate oil-mixing system they call VRO. Id like to get some informations and personal experiences from people who run motors with this system- to me it seems to be rather dangerous, because in the end youll only know that there was something wrong with it when your engine jams!? Even those tiny little siren could fail someday, couldnt it? So Im really thinking about kickin this whole system out- do I have any disadvantages from that? Im talking about oiled sparkplugs or whatsoever caused by running this motor on a fixed 1:50 oil-ratio?

Greetings,
Rotti

I have the same engine only johnson, and I could not idle for two minutes without the sireen sounding. Now its gone, I mix my oil 50/1 and I know it is lubricated. :D :D

Hi lakeman,

thanks for that answer! Did you take the whole sh... out of the motor housing or did you just disconnect and unplug and seal it? Im not that familiar with these motors, but if I should decide to go for it without VRO I´d really like to throw that complete bull out of the motor! Dont like some halfway solutions.... if there will be some more replies telling me that Ill get no problems running without VRO I´ll definetly get rid of it because I´m NOT TOO STUPID TO MIX THE RIGHT OIL-GAS RATIO!!! The manufacturers might think different about their customers (probably because theyre still paying these astronimical and artificially held up high prices for new motors without even complaining) but....

just smile,
Rotti

It's off my 1988 40HP Rude but still use the VRO fuel pump.

Just remove the oil injection line and block it.
Leave the Pump if its working.

I have a '85 evinrude 175 V6 the VRO pump went bad and I had to replace it it would hold pressure for the oil and gas but then lose pressure that might happen to you also. I would really like to know how to disconnect it and still get fuel pumped to the system. Good luck

Yea Rotti, that is the procedure I used. I don,t remember, but I think I read the procedure in manufacturers manual (I do not think they had as much faith in their system, as some of the contributors here). I have the satisfaction now, that the engine is being properly lubricated, and unlike some I do not consider mixing my own fuel to be a chore, but a safty feature for my investment. I have always been a firm believer in the saying "If you want it done right do it yourself". :D :D :D :D

Re: To VRO or Not VRO...

yeah, and I've taken the cambelt out of my car because if it fails, the motor will be stuffed. While I was at it, I replaced the electronic ignition with a points system, you know this new technology is SO unreliable...

Get with it guys, my vro has been running reliably for 13 years in my 2 motors.

With all due respect I don't feel that comparing a timing belt or an electronic ignition system verses one using breaker points is a fair analogy to OMC's VRO system being bypassed and mixing 50:1.

I agree with ob. There is no doubt that the early VRO systems had their problems and were the cause for many engines "going south". But on the side of the VRO system, the new systems are far better than the early model with advancements in alarm systems and such. This does not mean though that proper care and maint. is not required. I check my system out for leaks, tight fuel and oil lines and alarms working properly at least twice a year (I do a lot of boating and she herself takes her out when I'm at work). Also checking the reservoir oil level while fueling is a good thing to do. I've been running my system for about 9 years now with no problems.
Just my opinion.

I will mix mine, and I know the oil is there regardless of false sinals. :D :D

Re: To VRO or Not VRO...

hey outboard Jim,
what do you call the "early systems"?! When did Evinrude improve the vro and what did they change? My motor should be a 89 or younger (cause it has this touch-tilt system)- so would you stick to it?
Ive thought a lot over this and why the opinions here differ so much, but my only explanation for this is that its related to the size of the boats: I think all the guys that are using mobile tanks rather go for premix because premixing is very easy to do when youre using these little mobile tanks. Boaters with larger boats and bigger fixed gastanks like the vro much more ( they don´t have to gamble for the right ratio everytime they go to the gasstation...) and thusfor have learnt to handle and use it or maybe just learned to live with that constant fear of under-lubrification and still enjoy their motors lol......
Greetings,
Rotti

Re: To VRO or Not VRO...

hi,my mechanic told me that repairing engines which had a momentary vro failer was his bread and butter, after spending 2200.00 for a new power head i decided i'd rather spend 5 minutes mixing oil rather than working a bunch of ofertime at work to pay for repair's. unhook it and there's no worry about the oil getting to the motor, good boating, magnum :D
