I am replacing the off/on toggle for my aux fuel gauge which had 2 term. My new one is illuminated and has 3 terms which is throwing me off. I think the third might be for the light but not sure. one spade is load , one is ground and the other is positive. How do I do this??

Thanks

Re: toggle switch wiring

Do you know which terminals are Load, Positive, and ground?
If you do, they go like this.
Positive goes to your power source. (Battery, fuse panel, etc.)
Load goes to the I terminal of your fuel gauge.
Ground goes to ground and is only for the light in the toggle switch.

Re: toggle switch wiring

Thanks.. My new fuel gauge is not here yet but I feel that this info will help. My old gauge only had two conn. which I guessed was just a switch in-line to make or break.

The third spade is just confusing me

Thanks

Re: toggle switch wiring

Call me "curious" but why do you have toggle switch in y9ur fuel gauge circuit? Yhy not connect the gauge just like all the others such that power is obtained when the key is ON. You pick up +12 volts from the "I" terminal on any other gauge. Same for ground. Eliminate the switch. The gauge reads when the key is on.

Just so you understand how a switch works -- if you put a jumper between the LINE and LOAD terminals the gauge would be on all the time since you essentially eliminated the switch function. A switch functions like a break in the wire. OFF the circuit is broken. ON the connection is made. Jumpering the two terminals permanently makes the switch ON. Just elimiante the thing and wire to the other gauges.

Re: toggle switch wiring

I agree with your logic but the aux tank had a sep toggle switch and gauge as a after market add on. Due to age, I'm having to replace sending unit, gauge and the off/on toggle switch. I realize. that the toggle was in series which just broke the curcuit but the 3rd spade on the new toggle is confusing. I guess that I don't want an empty hole in my dash.

Re: toggle switch wiring

So use the switch for something else. No need to remove it.
