Hey gang,
I'm new to the boating world and have a tinny with a little 2.5hp outboard
the outboard is weeping oil out of what looks like a drain hole on the opposite side of the gear box housing to the oil fill and drain holes. I was hoping someone could tell me what this hole is for and whether weeping black oil is a worry. I've looked in Tohatsu service manuals and while the hole is visible in the diagrams i can't see any info on it.

Thanks

Re: Tohatsu 2.5 2 stroke - Oil Leak

What is your model? The M2.5A2 (or other 2-stroke motors) could have unburned fuel/oil residue weeping from the exhaust housing drain. The clue here is that it's black. Most LU lube is not black, so it's probably not the 90-weight from the LU. That drain allows the water to run out when the motor is out of the water, so it doesn't freeze in there. If the motor has never been de-carboned, that might help clean out some of the gunk.
