Well, I think I got the timing and linkage looking pretty good on my 2000 40D2 outboard....

I'm now trying to sync the 3 carbs and have a few questions...

I've read through the manual and just cant seem to figure it out...

When I push the throttle to WOT should the butterfly on the top carb (No 1.) be completely flat? Right now the butterfly is not completly flat when the top carb is open as far as it can go (hitting the stopper)

I'm not sure of the exact degree its at but when opened as far as it can go it looks to be about 20 degrees off of being flat....

Couldn't find any info on this in the factory manual and my eyes hurt from staring at the 3 carbs and re-reading the manual.....

Thanks for any advise in advance......

Also....Is it possible for me to hook up a spring to make sure I get back to the "Idle Stop" everytime?

It seems that no matter how much I adjust the throttle linkage I can't seem to get it to hit the idle stop screw consistantly to get my 3 degrees above TDC that the manual says I should get at idle.....

Elvin is the expert on the 40D, but I can offer this: The carbs already have return springs. If you are not consistently at the idle stop, something is wrong. Either a mis-adjustment, broken spring, or excess friction in the throttle linkages.

Re: Tohatsu 40D2 Carb sync help needed

Thanks for the reply Paul....And the parts to get me back on the water...

Actually all of my carbs are returning to the idle position...

The problem i'm having is the "Advancer Arm" not returning enough to get me to 3 degrees above TDC....It seems to be fighting the spring that keeps it at TDC and my linkage won't let it get me very far passed that point...

My main question is...

Do all 3 carbs need to go from "Fully Closed" (at idle) to "Fully Open" (At WOT)?

If it's a tiller model, lube every bit of moving/sliding parts including the tiller inside arm parts, sometimes some parts gets stuck and may tend to jam the system a bit. If remote, check throttle cable to run smoothly.

Happy Boating

Thanks for the reply searaider...

My outboard does have remote controls and I will be checking the linkage in the control box tomorrow to see if there is anywhere I can adjust the play a little bit to get a better travel going into neutral...

Here is a pic of the #1 top carb holding the linkage in WOT position hitting the carb throttle stopper on carb #1 after link and sync, it seems to me the butterflys should be flat/horizontal.....

Yes, you want fully open at WOT...
