Tohatsu 4hp exhaust

I don't see exhaust from the prop area in the water it's coming out the side hole that has the rubber cap. I already lost the cap once.
Engine will run for about a minute and then die. It will backfire also when trying to start it, Could salt water plug the exhaust?

more like salt water ate thru some of the castings into the water jacket.
