hello people,
i've been given an old tohatsu 5hp, i think its about 1981?
its only belived to have done 4hours at sea in all its life then sat in a shed for 25-30 years?
it still had a half full tank of fuel in it,
so i thought i would have a play.
it did'nt have a spark so stripped of the fly wheel, (can't belive how easy everything is coming apart, its all like new)
and cleaned the points, re-fit everything and she fired up and ran lovely but it's not pumping any water,
so i've taken the bottom bolts out and can split it from the leg about 10mm but its stuck on the gear linkage, (i think) i can see there is a split pin holding the gear link but there's no way i can split it far enough to get to it? is there another way of getting the gear link apart so i can change the impellar? many thanks dan and hope to hear from you

Quite obsolete. You will have trouble finding points, etc. Year is no consequence. If it a 5B, the shift linkage is disengaged by loosening the shift coupler by accessing the 6mm bolt (10mm head) through the grommet in the side of the leg.

hiya,
i managed to split it by releasing the intake pipe, but i can't seem to find an impellar? do you know where it is? its not anywhere in the gear box or on the prop side? if i start her up and put a hoes pipe on the intake pipe then it pumps water great, i was wondering if this type of engine will only pump when its in the water and in gear, cos the prop would direct the water flow up the intake pipe???? if you know what i mean?? any help would be great cos this little engine has loads of life left in it, many thanks dan

In order for us to help you, we need to know the model. Do you have an M5A or it the M5B?

What is the model number from the tag? The wp for the 5B mounts on the driveshaft, directly on top if the LU.

Re: tohatsu 5hp how to split the gear box from leg

Hello.
My model number is m5a2-s
there is no impellar in the lower unit. Not on the drive shaft or prop shaft. All I can find is an intake pipe directing to the prop. It looks like it only pumps water when its in gear and it forces water up the intake pipe.
If that makes any sense
I had it running last night in a bucket and if I put a hoes pipe directing in to the intake pipe then it pumps water great.
Many thanks Dan
