This is a sweet Avon dinghy motor I bought new in 2001. It probably has less than 50 hours, some minor corrosion on the case, and I want to run it forever. I have changed plugs, impellers, fuel filter, gear oil, greased fittings, etc. Some Questions:
1) Can it be upgraded to the 9.8?
2) What else can be done to maintain this motor?
3) What potentially rare parts should I stock?
4) What's the best anti corrosion primer for the clean aluminum, I don't care about the color?
Thaks for any help!

1. Yes. See the Factory service manual for differences between the 8 and 9.8.
2. When servicing the wp, install a full kit instead of just the impeller. De-carbon annually or as needed.
3. WP kits and carbs are common service items that often go obsolete as motors age.
4. Sand the bare metal, prep with a 2-part etch, coat with epoxy, prime/paint as usual.

Thanks, Paul
The parts book shows optional oversize piston & rings as well as a different carburetor.
Are the cylinder parts part of the conversion, or just as a repair for worn cylinders?
Would a dealer do this upgrade?

Larry

Re-read the parts book paying special attention to the block page.
