a while ago the engine would not start, there was no spark, after a little testing the coil was replaced and the engine started. again after a period of time the engine would not start, there was no spark. the kill button was replaced, no change, another coil was used, no change. using the clymer repair manual i performed ohm tests, the only thing that does not appear to check out is the c.d.i. unit, they are quite expensive, is there a way of testing the unit off the motor to be sure?

Re: tohatsu 9.9b 2-stroke

The correct electrical tests are in the Factory service manual. The aftermarket manuals may not have all the ohm tests for the CD.

Be careful; this could become a money pit. Parts for the 9.9B are getting scarce. Depending on carb model (2 different ones were used) you may or may not be able to get a needle-and-seat for the carb. Depending on the CD model, you may be able to get one, albeit at a significant cost. WP kits are still available.

My tohatsu 9.9b2 did a similar thing, but ended up being the pulser coil.. it did show up through testing, though, just as long as i tested it right after it quit getting spark. After a few minutes, the ohms would read normal again.

Yep. When there seems to be a thermal intermittent problem, you must test when the problem/condition is occurring. If it's having problems when hot, you want to test when hot.

thank you for your responses, is there any other other name for the pulser coil or a part number.

The three coils on the breaker plate are the trigger coil and the exciter coil, and if electric start, the alternator coil, assuming you have an M9.9B2. Specs are in the Factory service manual.
