Re: Tohatsu 90 TLDI
I currently own a 1988 60 HP Tohatsu engine. Some slight problems with it, but overall a good engine considering the abuse it has sustained over the years. However, I am now looking at purchasing a new 90 TLDI to put on my boat. I have heard great things about these engines, and was wondering if anyone on this board has any 'real world' experience with this engine. Any specific maintenance issues or problems to be concerned about? I have heard the Tohatsu will not release an engine until they feel that they have all of the kinks ironed out. Is this true?

I can tell you my friend & I bought two new boats together from Eastern Boats in Milton, NH. These are "not" production boats, they make around 120 boats a year.

Anyway, he bought a 20' Eastern Center Console (weight appx. 1800-1900 lbs.) & put a new 2004 Tohatsu 90 TLDI on back. We took her out last weekend (still very cold up here in New England) & geez I has truly impressed. Very smooth & just wonderful out of the hole. From what I gather, it will get excellent fuel economy aswell. One poster mentioned it being loud, I can say it didn't sound loud @ all. I sold my EFI 135 Mariner/Mercury & the Tohatsu sounded like a mouse in comparison.

Also, I think the engine cost him around $5900.00 (US) rigged w/ controls. Excellent deal IMHO. If I was getting a smaller boat, I think I would have given the Tohatsu 90 TLDI my business. But, I purchase a larger boat (24') & needed put a Honda BF150 on back. Good luck in your decision.

Regards,

Alex Moore
