I have a mid 80's Tohatsu 25 HP tiller outboard that I was using for duck hunting this winter. I had it out many times and it ran like a top. One day we were coming in from duck hunting and right at the boat ramp I hit some mud and the motor died. I was unable to get it started again. I thought I flooded it so I took it home and let it sit for a day or two. I tried to start it again and could not get it to stay running. I tinkered with it for 2 hours and then I replaced the plugs. (I proly should have done that first) After replacing the plugs it would run, but only if I had the throttle wide open. Even then it runs very rough, it cuts in and out. If I throttle down to shift it in to gear, it dies 8 out of 10 times.

It seems weird to me because it ran so good and then all of the sudden it just quit. Any ideas would be a big help!! The numbers on the motor are M 25 C and 372 71829 if that helps at all. Thanks!

At first glance, sounds like fouled carb. However, the shock of hitting bottom could have damaged something. I'd also check the water pump & cooling system in case mud has damaged or plugged it up.

Thanks for the quick responce! I thought the same thing about the water pump or something along those lines. When I did get it started it was pumping good clean water and that end of it seemed to be okay. I think I am going to take it to someone here localy to get it worked on! Sound like it is over my head!

I love the site....you guys do a great job!!

Does sound fuel related. But... it really needs to be properly diagnosed. Your shock/impact may have dislodged some crud in the fuel system, or you may have done something else. Only a proper diagnosis will really tell.
