I have a TOHATSU M3.5A 2-stroke with a conventional ignition system (points/condenser). What should be the points gap when fully open. I believe that they are opening too early. The engine frequently backfires when attempting to start. The magneto 'Woodruff' key has been replaced (the old one was sheared), and the plug appears to be sparking OK

You need to pick up a service manual. The points are not set with a feeler gauge so you need to see the method to set it...Points and condenser issues don't cause a backfire either.

Re: TOHATSU M3.5A 2-stroke - Ignition problem(s)

Unfortunately my shop manual does not cover my engine (only units fitted with a 'CDI' 1992 - 2000). When I stated that the engine backfires, what I should have said was that it kicks back when attempting to start it via the recoil starter. This is why I have theorised that the points are opening to early, and forcing the engine backwards when on the up-stroke. I have also just noticed that my parts list does not depict a set of points? Any further help would be appreciated. ( i.e. where can I obtain the correct parts list and shop manual etc). Or, if someone knows what the points gap should be when fully open. Many thanks
