Tohatsu M30A3 - Is my prop too large?

Hi,

I have a 30hp 2 stroke Tohatsu installed on a 14' Livingston and I'm wondering if I might have the wrong prop size?

Let me preface this by saying that the boat runs fine. The boat planes quickly with two guys + gear on board, and usually tops out at about 22-24 mph depending on surface conditions. The engine itself has great compression as well and sounds smooth when in full throttle.

Where I'm encountering problems is poor gas mileage (we should be getting about 5.0-5.5 mpg but are only seeing about 3.5) and low top rpms (we should be getting about 5.0K but are only seeing about 3.2K). This is making me wonder if perhaps my prop might be too large and may be over torquing the engine?

I recently replaced the old prop with a new Tohatsu prop based on the recommendation of my local Tohatsu dealer. I know nothing about props, but I can tell you the model size stamped on the new prop is "TB 48-11" & "9.9x11". Does this sound right? I have a Tohatsu parts catalog and I noticed that they manufacture six different prop sizes for my model engine (props 8 through 14).

Thanks for your thoughts.

I don't believe the tach reading. Are you using an aftermarket?

The only way to re verify is install a Tiny Tach set it to 180? firing and make a wot test, that horse should be reving up to 5.85K at wot, this is exact science for choosing correct prop pitch.

Happy Boating

Good point. Yes I am which could explain a lot of things except for the poor fuel economy. I'll try to find a different tachometer just to be sure. Thanks.
