I have a new short shaft 3.5 hp four stroke that has clocked only about 12hrs. The first 10 hrs was in fresh water and the last two done today on salt water.Occasionally it would lower its revs and die.I t would then restart with ease and go again for a few hundred metres before diong the same again. This would happen between half to full throttle.

I thought that maybe there is moisture in the fuel or moisture on the plug.I am in a strut....help!

Cheers

Re: Tohatsu MFS 3.5 cuts out

I have seemed to find the answer to the problem. As the fuel tank is built in,all fuel supplied is gravity fed.If I keep the throttle wide open, the fuel does not fill the carb bowl quick enough (as only gravity fed) and the motor wants to die or dies.So just before you can hear a hint of a splutter, tap off the throttle a little to give the carb a chance to refill and away you go.

0. You are probably still under warranty, so a dealer should be able to help. Of course there's no warranty for bad/comtaminated fuel.

1. Make sure the cap vent is OK. A little restriction will cause a slight vacuum in the tank.

2. Make sure the engine tilt is OK. There have been times when, if the tank is low on fuel, the draw tube can be above the fuel level in the tank.

3. Check the inline strainer (part of the shutoff ****) to see if there's debris in it. I had one that clogged because the chain for the gas cap was incorrect, and the chain disintegrated and clogged the strainer.

4. Of course, check that the oil is not overfilled as well.
