18 HP M18C2
Bought this motor 1 year ago on a Smoker Craft that was used in fresh water and salt water. Today I ran it with the garden hose in my driveway, runs perfect, but the tale tale pee line stopped. Do I need to replace the impeller? If so, any suggestions on how to do this?
Thanks for any help

Re: tohatsu question

step one... get a manul, ebay has them, iboats has them, your tohatsu dealer has them

step 2, remove the lower unit, usually about 4 or 6 10 millimeter bolts.
remove shift linkage
slowly slide lower unit down untill all is clear... dont drop it....
water pump is directly on top of lower unit, youll see it when it comes off. when you take off the housing cover, keep all the bolts, and if you have a digi camera or a camcorder, take pics or video along the way so you know how it goes back together

when you remove impeller, be very slow. DO NOT LOSE THE IMPELLAR KEY ! KEEP IT SAFE !

replace any applicable gaskets and drain and change your lower unit oil while your at it.

once you do it 1 time, youll see just how easy and straight forward it is........

and oh , the impellar will starighten itself when you put it on... do not worry, and yes, it IS SUPPOSED to be that hard to get the new one back in the housing

m ikey

Re: tohatsu question

Before you remove the lower unit, pull the tell tale hose and check for obstructions. It is under the cowel and goes from the tell tale to the exhaust cover. It is always a good thing to change out the impeller every few years though. Good luck.

Re: tohatsu question

Mike is right - and helped me through a similar situation just a few weeks ago. As was mentioned, check for obstructions (I used a wire coat hanger) and then if that doesn't do the trick it is likely the impeller or thermostat. I found the best prices on an impeller kit off of eBay through Avalon Professional Group - it was right around $45 for my model with everything I needed including a new key.

Again, take your time and do it right.

Re: tohatsu question

when taking off the bolts to drop the lower unit, be VERY careful. the bolts are stainless in aluminum and can become rather stuck. this can be a tricky operation. if a bolthead is broken off, the job becomes a real pain in the ___. lol

Re: tohatsu question

Hi guys,

I have a 6hp 4 stroke Tohatsu w/ 40 hours on it.

I launch in saltwater from the beach.

Engine has been running flawless until I noticed something yesterday running it at home in a bucket to flush w/ freshwater and run the fuel out.

I ran the engine longer and a little higher RPM to force more freshwater through the system and after about 5 minutes I noticed the p-hole water was hot, the shaft was hot to the touch and steam was coming out of the rubber fitting on the shaft. I also noticed the water in the bucket was getting warm due to the p-hole water returning to the bucket.

I let cool for a day and then re-did but just idle RPM. Within minutes, the p-hole water was warm and shaft was getting hot again. Water in bucket was cool.

I assumed maybe an issue w/ the impellar so I disassembled and found the impellar to look perfect which makes sense since the p-hole has a steady stream.

Any ideas? Should the shaft get that hot under normal operation and there is no issue here?

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: tohatsu question

Before you pull anything, try running a wire up the tell tale. If that doesn't clear it (50% chance it will), try blowing 5psi or so of compressed air up the hole. ( 75%) that will clear it. If neither improves the flow, you need a WP rebuild (which is never a bad idea but better left to off season IMHO).

ps water from the discharge can get pretty warm (but not scalding) when run in a bucket. It's a combination of running increasingly heated and aerated water through the block vs cool , clear water.
