I am converting from a 21' starcraft (Chieftain) been participating in the starcraft forum. To a Tolman Jumbo, boat building book is Tolman Alaskan Skiffs by Renn Tolman. This is a stitch & amp; glue plywood/fiberglass/marine epoxy boat. Basically a composite boat, light weight, very sea worth. I fish the pacific ocean (Oregon) and wanted a bigger boat, could not find a 25 or 26 foot starcraft to rebuild. So earlier this year I started building a Tolman Jumbo. You can start from a kit or raw materials. I chose the raw material route, Hydrotek marine plywood, versa-lam stringers, doug fir shelves, aero Marine epoxy. Pictures say a 1,000 words so here is the progress so far. If you have questions ask away, this is the first boat I have built, had lots of help from fishyfish friends (tolman boat building forum), of course the Renn Tolman boat building book. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolman_Skiff
Many reason to build a boat like this mainly cost savings and light weight (light to tow and requires less hp). A 27' with a 150hp OB will run 30+ mph and get 3.5 mpg.
I off set the transom cutout 30" one side for a kicker and slightly less on the other side, plan to off set the main engine 8" to help make room for the kicker. Others have off set the main with no ill effects that way the kicker and main won't hit each other.

Just glassed the bottom and sides this weekend, adding additional layers of epoxy and ordered paint. Hope to flip in July and start on the cabin/pilothouse/floor.

You're really doing it EH! Man that looks like a ton of work right there.I guess you'll be out there on overnighters chasing some wicked tuna with your new hand built boat. So are you going to gel coat that epoxy with some color to protect the epoxy or paint the hull?

Looks great so far!

I just ordered about $700 in paint. I am going with a dark grey bottom, mystik blue sides, and white cabin. I am getting SM-1000 paint and adding a hardening agent. It is suppose to have a 40+ accelerated testing and 10 year warranty. I am going with the SM-644 primer then SM-1000 paint on the whole outside of the boat. I looked into an airboat coating for the bottom but that was about twice the price. I did not want anti foul paint, so there was not many paints that said they were good for long term submersion. It's a big project.

That's going to be a super paint scheme... looking forward to seeing you get to that stage of the build.
