I an looking at a 23' trophy on craigslist..

http://jacksonville.craigslist.org/boa/1065994437.html

The guy said everything is in great shape and the boat is solid as a rock. He is only asking $2000. The motor needs to be replaced, but other than that, the rest of the boat is good. I havent seen it in person yet, and want to know how to check for rot without drilling out core samples.. Dont think the guy would be too cool with that, I know I wouldnt.. I am willing to sell my project that I completed that I love to death so I can scoop this boat up real quick, just seems too good to be true with a price like that. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Too good to be true?

The way I see that is its a 17 year old entry level boat with a bad motor, after the cost of a new motor and any other normal maintenance items it's likely to need, you may end up right about where it would be worth turn key.
I'd figure that boat to be somewhere in the $5 to $6k range tops with it's trailer in turn key running condition.
A fresh motor, and all the incidentals would no doubt get you there if you do it yourself. Beyond if you have to pay for labor.
It might be an OK deal for someone with a good used 4.3L and that needs a hull if it is indeed as clean as the ad claims.

Re: Too good to be true?

that looks like a good deal....

BUT.....you are only about breaking even on the trailer and hull....you could part that boat out for more than 2k......but if you want a running boat......

4.3......(good used 2k)
drive......1k....
installation and incidentals.......$500-1500

thats the math.......

a good friend of mine told me today......if there is any hesitation....the deal aint sweet enough!........he also said.....there will be another great deal comin up in a day or two.....so hang in there....

having said all that............TD....is the resident expert on the jax craigs list....he might have better more detailed info for the area....including inside info on a running 4.3.

cheers

Re: Too good to be true?

As far as the core samples, Ask. I personally would not be opposed to and would probably offer it up if I were selling a boat that had any age on it. After experiencing the rot in my boat, that would be one of my major concerns. To the knowledgable buyer It would be a good selling point. Ditto what oops! and reelfishin said. And if there's ANY rot, put on yer walkin' shoes!

Re: Too good to be true?

hmm, well it looked like a pretty sweet deal to me. That is if I can get a motor cheap, and put it in myself. I dont want to sell a ready to run boat to get somethin I wont be able to afford to ever get on the water. The guy has reposted asking 2000, I figure I could get it for a bit less since he seems to be in a bind to sell it. I guess I just need to check it out for myself. My previous boat, I thought the transom was solid, then I went to install a transducer and wet mush came out, and water even trickled out.. So it seems the only way to really know is drill out some samples.. We will see. Thanks for the responses.

Re: Too good to be true?

here's the engine http://daytona.craigslist.org/boa/1071787818.html really and truely, he has a worth less boat. without a power train. check the outdrive oil, turn the prop. have him put it in gear and try to turn prop. the trailer in Jacksonville Market is $700-900. the Hull itself, maybe $800-1000. unless it is in really great shape. that is what i would base my 1st offer on.

also did you hear about our Florida iboats camp out? http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=291501 let me know if you wish to attend.

Re: Too good to be true?

To me it looks like a decent deal. I would try to knock the price down for sure. I was looking for pretty much that exact boat when I found mine. Personally Im not 100 % sure I would pay much more that 1500 for that boat.

Its all up to you and how willing you are to put sweat equity into the boat and make it something you want. I was fortunate, I got my 92 Pursuit 2150 for $300 and a case of beer. I have since rebuilt the drive, completely rewired the boat, and I still have to put a new motor, and electronics in it.
