I have a couple of mid 80's vinatage johnson kickers (6 &2) that the owners manual sais to use 100:1 mix in. Have read I can to use 50:1 or more. Does this ( 50:1) effect how the motor runs? Mine seem to smoke ALLOT more than their Merc counterparts that are designed to run 50:1. ( Especially the 2 hp) .

Re: Too much oil or..???

OMC replaced the 100:1 recommendation with 50:1 after a lot of engines showed internal corrosion due to inadequate oil coating when put in storage for a while, Tacoma.

The engines will run fine on 100:1 or 50:1, but should be run on 50:1 before being put up for a while.

Small engines usually SEEM to smoke a lot to their operators. A lot of that depends on the oil you use.

OMC should have issued dealers stickers to cover those 100:1 stickers.

They did send us a service bulletin saying operating on 100:1 was fine, storage was not.

DHP

Re: Too much oil or..???

Thanks Much, I'll probobly continue to run them on 50:1 since I never know when is the "last time" for the season on any of my stable of little outboards. ( Makes mixing for the fleet easier too) Nice to know I can go lower on these two though if I run low.
p.s. Always run premium grade oil from OMC or Quicksilver (interchangeably). I try to stear clear of the generic stuff.
