Too much oil that did not get mixed up

I have a 1975 85hp Johnson that has only about 30hrs. on it. I had it looked over, carbs rebuilt, ignition parts checked and some replaced that needed it, and replaced water pump. It has really been running good until no oil was put into the 12 gallon tank until we reached the boat ramp. 9 gallons of fresh gas were added to the tank. Upon reaching the boat ramp, about 1.25 quarts of oil (Quiksilver) was added to the tank and not mixed up prior to starting. When we started the motor it started right up, but when the fuel in the tank got to the motor that was it. It would not start back up. Oil droplets were floating on top of the water. I pulled the plugs and they were covered with oil. I cleaned them off and put them back in and tried to restart. I did this several times only for it to hit a little if any each time, but never start. After shaking up the tank I then removed the gas line and cleared it of all gas and put it back on. Same results. I took it home emptied tank, replaced plugs, removed screws on bottom sides of carbs, and sprayed carb cleaner in carbs in the intake and the drain holes. It will now start, but only with the throttle pinned in full blast. When I try to let it idle or put it in gear it dies. It is also much harder to start. It wont start in the start position anymore, instead it has to be full throttle. Any suggestions on how to get it back to normal would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to provide as much info as possible so Yall could help me. Thanks

Flush your entire fuel system, Kris.

Dismantle and clean your carbs. Then you should be okay.

Good luck. :)

Ive already flushed the tank and the line, but is there anything I can do that might take care of the problem with out pulling the carbs. Last time I pulled the carbs on my Merc it did not run right for a year and finally had to take it to a mechanic.

Drop the carbs, you will never get all of the Oil out any other way.

I would also suggest dropping the carbs. However, I did have luck once with the following method (your mileage may vary) I used the fuel hose to pump carbs full of Berryman's B12 fuel cleaner. Let sit for a few hours, opened drain screws on carbs. Shut screws, refilled carbs with B12. Repeated steps until quart of cleaner was gone. Worked fine. I still advise R&R of carbs, however. Good luck!

Kris, here is what I was told is The Method of adding oil to fuel (12 gallon tank) ... 3 gallons of gas, add your oil, fill it with gas .. the churning will mix the oil and gas together

but first you have to purge the old stuff out .. get some gaskets, break out the manual and drop the carbs

just do it!

good luck
