Too much oil?

My local marine repair shop recommended a 50 to 1 ratio for my 55'rude fleetwin 7.5. Is this wrong? Also, my lower unit, when I drained it, had this light greyish creamy stuff.... I flushed it through with some fresh lube.... So much for where this motor has been.... I totally replace the ignition parts and got it running. Th throttle handle slips where the brass gears meet... They are worn down... Where can I get these at a good price? Also, any tips for making this a long term relationship would be welcome.... Thanks in advance guys.

Re: Too much oil?

I have a 55 5.5 hp johnson I say play it safe and run it at 24:1. running it at 50:1 seems really lean for that motor I have herd of people doing it before and saying it worked well and I have heard other stories ending in disaster

Nice motor. I have one just like it. Mix it at 24:1. 50:1 will kill it.

You probably have a little water in the lower unit. You could have it pressure tested to find out for sure. You could also just replace the seals on the drain and vent screws, refill with oil, take the motor for a 15 min run and then check the oil again. If you still have oil you'll either need to have the seals replaced or you will have to decide how much water you can live with in the lower unit. A small amount won't cause too much trouble if you change the oil frequently. However, the price of oil is enough that after a few changes you would have paid for the seals (but not the labour involved if you take it to a shop).

The tiller gears wear out all the time. I have bought them on eBay has part of the handle assembly, but you can also get them from various places on the net like TwinCity http://tcoutboard.com/.

Those small engine's up to 7 1/2 horepower are bushed bearing's in the early years, meaning crank pin, and wrist pin. They did not take well to 50-1 mix. The later engine's with roller bearing's seemed fine. The roller engine's are from the early 60's. 62, 0r 3, as I recall.
