I have an '88" 15 hp evinrude. the recomended mix is 50:1 according to the manual. What is the worst that can happen if I put more oit than the recomended. I was told that it was good to always put a little more out than the recomended. (instead of 50:1 I am putting 40:1)

Can I blow the engine if I put too much oil?

or what happens if I put too little?

thanks

Re: too much oil

It won't hurt, but I wouldn't bother. It isn't needed. More smoke, more fouled plugs, more carbon buildup.

If you put in too little, bad things will happen. Your engine depends on this mixture to lubricate properly. Do not deviate from it. Run 50:1!!

Re: too much oil

I've run a lot at 40:1 without noticable plug fouling or other problems - other than possibly more smoke. I do believe that anything more than 50:1 is wasted, but I also believe that it is pretty much harmless to mix a little too much oil - and much better than erring on the side of too little oil. So that's what I do - shoot for 50:1, but don't sweat it if it happens to be closer to 40:1 from time to time.

Just for example, oil is marketed in quarts - which for 50:1, gives you increments of 6 (1/2 qt) and 12 (full qt) gallons for mixing. Mixing the same amount of oil for 5 or 10 gallons gives you 40:1. Therefore, when I top off my built in tanks, I use the same amount of oil whether it's 5 to 6 gallons; 10-12, 18-20, etc. I don't bother measuring any closer than that. Makes it simple and safe (in my opinion).

Re: too much oil

The more oil you run, the less fuel you have per given volume, creating a leaner fuel burn, higher temps, as a result, hard carbon build-up follows-don't deviate from the recommended mixture.
Just in case, the Wiseco piston P/N is 3036.
Oh yea, I forgot to mention the high resistance created by the oily plugs requiring several thousand volts more to fire the plugs, shortening the life of the ignition system.....
