Too much pressure pulling bearing case on 35hp?

Is it possible to damage something if puller is tightened too much? I made hooks out of 3/8" eyebolts. Transmission fluid, rust buster and other stuff has been put on the bearing case and heated with a small propane torch.

I should have just replaced the seals instead of heating but didn't know better, anyhow the Oring should probably be checked. The heat from a big propane gas tank was used so it got really hot once.

Thanks.Picture 725.JPG

If it's a salt water motor, the bearing carrier will come out hard. Heat, and gradually increasing the center bolt force, along with a lot of patience, should get the thing moving. Use a flame speader tip and move the flame around the LU housing. Good luck!

Is there two bolts attached to the retainer plate? If so have you need to remove them.

Some of those carriers demand an extreme amount of heat BUT do not attempt to use an acetylene torch which could melt the aluminum quite easily.

Use a hand held propane torch with a blow torch tip, apply heat to the circular portion of the lower unit that surrounds the carrier just inside the lower unit..... which is where all of the salt corrosion builds up. It may also be necessary to apply heat at the large O Ring sealing area but normally the jamming is at the portion just inside the lower unit.

Always worked for me.

Try Mapp gas as it is hotter than propane.

Yes it has been in salt water. When I put transmission fluid on the outmost part of the carrier, the heat sucks it between the case and carrier. I leave the puller on hoping it sill pop loose. The extra bolt or bolts is to keep the j hooks from pulling towards the center. The retainer bolts are out.

I was told that Mapp gas can melt the case too.

I'll heat it and apply some more pressure tomorrow.

Propane is about as hot as one would want to go. Any hotter can get expensive.

I've used the Mapp gas quite a bit and never had a prob. When you get to acetylene you have to know what you are doing. Old rule of thumb with it, "when the alum starts to puddle" Stop. LOL.

The tips of the hooks weren't touching anything yet the 3/8" bolts just bent with more pressure. Looks like I will have to get someone take a look at it, a 9.9, and 48hp.
