'96 Mercury/4 cyl/Oil injection. Ran it with the ear muffs in the back yard. The entire yard was filled with smoke after a couple of minutes. Is this too much smoke? I don't recall it making that much smoke in the past.

Re: Too much smoke?

Should clear up after a run. Mine's (1980 50hp) not injected, but it'll fog the driveway at times.

Also, some oils smoke worse than others. Castrol seems to be one of the smokier ones.

Nikko

TSanders13,

This message is off topic, but did you solve your WOT overheat alarm problem that you posted about back in July? I would like to know the outcome of that issue.

Regards,
John

Re: Too much smoke?

mcgurk,
I haven't gotten a chance to run it in the water since I lowered the motor. I'm planning on doing that today. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I didn't run it long enough to see if it cleared up, I just installed a tach so I was checking to make sure it was working. When I run it today I should get an idea if clears up. As long as it is making smoke it is at least getting oil, right?

mcgurk34,

WOT overheat fixed, thanks for the help. I was close to selling my motor.

The smoke problem did clear up after running the motor for a few minutes.

It can't be any worse than my old 50hp.

Unfortunately for unrelated reasons a crankshaft bearing cracked a few seconds after this picture was taken and all of the needles fell into #3 cylinder. Needless to say I'm not using that motor anymore.
I wish I had brought a camera last week when I fired up my 1975 50hp on my 14' and went across the lake, when I looked back I realised I had left a cloud of smoke so thick around the dock that my friends had to stop fishing and go to shore.
Eric

Re: Too much smoke?

My 1970's Merc. 1400 hundred smokes up a storm. I just bought it and changed the plugs and sprayed the carbs because it didnt want to start. Now it starts right up fast too, but it smokes like a freaking chimeny. Can i take it out to a lake in California like that? I ran it for about 15 min. and it still smoked. The good thing it water pump works after sitting for over a year. Any suggestions?
