Too much smoke!

I have a 1986 I/O bayliner with a 130hp 4cyl OMC/VolvoPenta engine. The engine does not idle very well at all all of a sudden. Black smoke is now pluming through the exhaust. I noticed water was not flowing through the exhaust like it usually does but was escaping out the sides of the intermediate housing. Engine temperature was fine. At the same time the tilt motor went out. I believe the lower unit was not completely down allowing water to escape. If this isn't the problem should I be concerned? Is it still safe to run the engine to determine the problem?

Black smoke? Sounds like a stuck choke or float causing it to run rich. I would expect to see some water out the exhaust regardless of the trim position, unless the exhaust bellows has a rip in it. As long as water is making it to the engine, and temp is normal you should be fine to run it for diagnostics.

Re: Too much smoke!

There was some water coming out the back. Would you suggest I take the carberator apart if it's not a stuck choke? Thanks for your help.
