Too Short of a Range for Neutral in Shifter

Hey guys,
I'm finishing up the OMC/Mercruiser SEI conversion, and the last problem I'm having is the shift.
Problem: It shifts in to forward and reverse fine, but when trying to return to neutral, I'm having a few issues. The first issue is that the ESA switch is pretty tough to get to engage. It takes some force to pull the lever to get the ESA to kick in. When it does finally engage, the engine momentarily stalls, and it pops out of gear easily, like it's supposed to. Unfortunately the ESA doesn't engage until the lever is past neutral, or right at it. I can click the handle into neutral from either direction with the drive still in gear.
When it finally does pop out of gear, it seems like reverse is waiting just a short distance away, and it goes directly from FWD to REV, skipping neutral. This happens from REV to FWD too.

So my question is if this sounds like it could be a problem with the conversion, or if this is an adjustment issue that normal systems have. If its just an adjustment issue, which adjustment should I be using to solve this? I see 3 places I can adjust on the linkage on the engine. If this sounds like a conversion problem, I'll consult with the SEI tech team. They've been a ton of help so far.

Boat Info:
1991 Four Winns Horizon 180. 4.3 Ltr OMC. SEI/Mercruiser conversion Alpha One Gen II sterndrive.

Other info that may be helpful, or not, I don't know.
1) The shift was tough when I got the boat before the conversion. I had a mechanic work on that and told me it was working, but never tested it after he worked on it because of the outdrive issue.
2) I THINK I'm using after market controls. There are 2 holes that I can use to mount the shift cables to the controls. The inside hole is where the cable is mounted now. (less throw). I can't mount to the outside hole (longer throw) because there isn't enough throw in the cable to allow me to mount there. The cable stops the control before it reaches the end. I'm guessing the inside is for an OMC shift cable, and the outside is for a Mercruiser.

Any suggestions you guys have would be helpful.

Thanks!
