ok, i give up. the dealer told me that my V8 looper should only turn 5500 and i would be pushing it at that! i dont get it. the OMC service manual says operating range is 5200-5500 but the rev limiter is 6700. why wouldn't OMC make the rev limiter 5500 if that is all it's designed to turn? from what i've herd i have alot more power to tap into if i can break the 6000rpm mark.is there an easy way to check the timing without a test weel and special tdc tool? thanks...james

Maybe it's a "just in case" option. Say you see something getting to close to you and you need to punch it. I sure wouldn’t run it up there if I didn’t have to but any option in a bad situation is a good option. ;)

u could prob get that much if your motor is not under a load.... thats why it is set that high.

rev limiter is to prevent a runaway in the event of an over rev on muffs or in some unexpected
accident.
Racing motors are prepared to run at very high rpms but their usefull life is still pretty short
compared to a stock outboard run at its proper max rpm.
