It is starting to become boating weather up here in Minnesota, hoping it doesn't snow tomorrow. I am in the process of getting my boat ready.

Just wondering what I should have or you have for an idea with a tool box. I have a 16ft fiberglass bowrider with an 85hp 2stroke merc.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Re: Tool box

First of all: Do not buy any low quality tools ('it's just for the boat - ain't gonna use in the workshop'-excuse). Once on the water even a minor problem cannot be solved with tools that does not work.

As a normally serviced motor is very unlikely to fail (and if it does you do not have the part onboard anyway), it's better to think about the other gear on your boat: A spare prop (+ Merc's yellow prop nut tool) nuts & bolts for steering, fuel, fuses/wire/fittings for electrics and so on. And a tight(!) box to keep it in along with some universal standard tools.

I've been boating for more than 30 yrs and never needed any tools when out. But like a spare wheel: Better carry one and never need it than the other way around..

Re: Tool box

You really don't need an all inclusive tool kit like they sell at some of the major boating stores:
Buy top quality tools!!!
Vice grips,
4, screw drivers, 2 Std, 2 Philips,
8" adj. Cresent,
8" cutting Dikes,
2 ea, Pointed pliers'
Roll Duck tape,
Roll elec. tape,
assort. wire ties,
Spare cotter pins,
Grease gun,
Can of T-9'
Buy a water tight box, and still oil all of the tools,
I put some of mine in a zip-lock bag.
Take an inventory of the fuses now in use a buy a few spares, + spare bulbs for the running lights'
Good flashlight.
To purshase these, approx. $70 to start, One thing to always remenber "Preventive Maintenance" is the best insurance, Do it in port and you won't need the tools at sea!!
Always carry spare oil 1 gal.

Some others may -add- more but to start I gave the basics. Good Luck.

Definition of a 'good mechanic' :
knowing just how hard you can hit something without breaking it!

Re: Tool box

I've been assembling my tool kit, and one thing I keep in mind:

Think of 1 single item that can fail and leave you completely stranded. Examples would be: BELT(s), fuel pump, prop, etc...

Carry a spare of these items. These items rarely fail, but when they do it will either be in the middle of B.F.E., or somewhere where the part costs more than your boat is worth and takes 6 months by camel to get to you!

Also, I found a great waterproof box made by PLANO. This is the only one I found so far that is strong enough. This one has a decent O-ring for a seal, and not the weak foam seal.
You can get them at Boatus.com, Boatersworld.com, and Cabelas.com. Boatus seems to be the cheapest at the moment, however BoatersWorld has different colors.

Hope this helps,

H.

A small pelican case works well too! It also floats.

I have been known to put tools, parts, etc. is a surplus Army ammo box. Waterproof, tough, and cheap. Will most likely float. Available in various sizes, depending upon caliber.

I use em in my Jeep too. Just a thought.

jocko
