I'm looking for the tool to remove the pinion nut from a '72 1400 mercury. I think it's just an adapter that slides on. The only ones I have found are for Mercruiser and I'm not sure if they are the same or not. If theres another way to do this without the tool that would be great to know as well.

I used a pipe wrench on driveshaft and socket with a breaker bar on pinion nut on my 115

I was thinking about something along those lines as well but I don't want to mess up the driveshaft to bad.

I put a couple of grooves in mine but nothing some emery cloth didn't take care of. Just make sure wrench is no where near any sealing areas.

I just went thru that task a couple weeks ago on my 1971 Merc 800. I found that a 13/16 (I think) 12 point socket fit over the splined end of the driveshaft. A socket and breaker bar inside the housing holds the pinion nut while I spin the 13/16" socket with an impact gun. No problems at all.

I think I read somewhere as well that you can use a crescent wrench and put it on the flat spot for the water pump key. I'll play with it tomorrow and see what I can do.

I got the pinion nut pulled off. A 13/16 wrench fit perfectly where the key for the water pump goes. I can't get the pinion gear to come off though. I think I saw somewhere where there is a screw to hold the upper driveshaft bearing in but I don't see one. My housing is already ruined so I'm not worried about damaging it. I just want to pull the gears and shaft out to put in a different housing.

Yeah, I had the same problem. Was told that it would be difficult, but that pinion gear is really on tight.

There is probably as suitable Merc tool available for the job BUT, I just laid a piece of 2x4 wood across the top of the LU housing and gave it a couple good whacks with a 3Ib hammer while hanging onto the driveshaft with my other hand. Not elegant but effective.

I tried holding the driveshaft and beating on the housing but I was using a deadblow. My housing is shot anyway so I don't mind beating on it.
