need to set timing on 1979 evinrude 140 HP., I read the manuel and it tells me to install a piston stop tool into #1 cylinder spark plug hole in order to adjust the tdc pointer.. its not word for word, but I get the idea, have to set the timer pointer before setting the timing.. am I correct so far? do I have to use this tool or is there a makeshift tool I can make? is there another way around this?

Re: tool ?

You could bust the guts out of a spark plug and weld a rod in it to act as a piston stop.

Re: tool ?

not quite following you.. do you mean to watch the rod while moving the piston to determin when the rod stops moving, Im assumeing that it will then be on tdc?then mark the spot??

Re: tool ?

just made a tool like that last week. just as F R said, gut an old spark plug and put in a bolt or something like that, basicly so it's lenth won't change. Install the tool in the number one cylinder, then carefully rotate the flywheel in one direction untill it stops, mark where the pointer is on the flywheel with a pencil, then rotate the flywheel the other way and again mark with a pencil. then take a ruller that has the inches that are broke down to the 32nd or even 64th divisions and measure half way between the two marks and then mark that spot. now remove the tool then move the flywheel so that the half way pencil mark is alinged with the pointer. now without moving the flywheel, move the pointer to line up with the TDC that is on the flywheel

that should do it
