Tools for ignition testing

I found info on this a while back but can't find it again. I built a remote starter for testing but it doesn't crank the engine over as fast as the key will. I used 14 ga wire and aligator clips and a push button starter.

Is this how it should be built or should I get heavier wire?

I also got a marine load resistor and it didn't come with any instructions for use. Does anyone know how to use this for testing?

It might be a good sticky to put in the engine repair area for others to use as well. Thanks.

Re: Tools for ignition testing

I'm trying to get my motor running (no spark issue) and it's a pain in the butt to check for spark. I have to call my wife out to help, because my arms are too short to reach from the back of the engine to the key/control box to check for spark. It's not used for running, just need it when I'm running tests and checking things.

Maybe I should have called it remote switch or something like that.

14 ga should be heavy enough as long as you're hooking to the correct terminals on the starter solenoid. There should be 4 terminals on the solenoid. A large one coming from the battery, and a large one going to the starter. A small one coming from the ignition and a small one going to ground. Connect your remote starter switch to the battery and ignition terminals.

That would not be correct on hooking the remote starter up.. conect one of the allgator clamps to the battiery wire on the solenoid and the other clamp to the smaller stud that is not your ground.. the ground will be a black wire.
after doing such your motor should spin normal
