I bought something very similar from eBay to install my gimble and check alignment on mine last year and it worked well for that. I did not use it to remove the gimble , so I can't attest to its efficiency there.

If you are doing your own maintenance or winterizing and pulling the outdrive each year I would highly recommend using the alignment tool to check the alignment when the drive is removed. Normally alignment doesn't change much, if any, but mis-alignment can ruin a gimbal bearing, u-joints, etc. Most engines are supported at 4 points. One point at each rear corner of the engine and one on each side. If you do have to remove the engine, try not to disturb at least one side of each mount's adjustment. This should help get you get pretty close to correct alignment when the engine is being re-installed.

I've always wondered how to change the gimbal bearing, some say you have to pull the motor out and some say you leave the motor in?? This is for a Volvo Penta 290 drive. Just don't know how the spline comes out before the gimbal bearing. Is there like a circlip or something?

No gimbal bearing in a 290 drive.
