I have written a post or two about this before and I am finally getting around to it. I have a '91 40hp evinrude that I am trying to removed the tilt assist unit from. The bottom rod came out really easy (Kind of suprised me!) I suspect the top one would come out relatively easy too, except I can't get to it to pound it out. The part of the mount that the actual motor is attached to makes it virtually impossible to get a straight shot at the pin. Has anyone done this before and know a trick or a better tool than a brass punch to remove it? Looking for that "old trick" that this rookie hasn't learned yet....Is there one? Thanks in advance. I would post a picture, but the wife has my camera and is overseas right now.

No need for a picture. We're all too aware of the pin you speak of.

I use a steel rod, a piece of an old driveshaft usually as a drift pin. Also I use the biggest hammer I can lay my hands on.

Use a hand held propane torch to heat the aluminum that surrounds the pin to help loosen it somewhat. If this doesn't do it, the only recourse is to remove the engine from the boat and lay the engine down to really get a good shot at that pin.

One other method that may be a little more drastic is to take a dremel tool and rout out that existing arc that is wayy too small. That would give you a straight shot on the tilt pin. I gave up on knocking out the tilt pin and removed everything else depending on what you are trying to accomplish.
