Im going to install a 12 gal. top side fuel tank on my toon. does this or should this tank be removed when filling it?
I see removal being recomended for the portable tanks (6 gal.) I dont realy know what the difference in the tanks would be. Seems like it would be a pain in the *** to remove the tank every time & heavy too

side QUESTION just bolted up my outboard the other day. Should I silicon the bolts & bolt holes?

Thanks guys!

Re: top side tank

I run a 12 gallon red plastic tank in my jon boat and there just ain't no way to pick that up full of gas, so I just leave it in the boat with no problems, so far. The theory/reason for moving the tank onto the dock to fill it up is for grounding purposes and no static electricity/sparks. Probably a good idea to keep a fire extenguisher handy whenever you're gassing up, just in case. My motor was bolted through the transom with gobs of silicone rubber by the factory, so I guess that's the best way. Good Luck!

I'd recommend 3M 4200 over the silicone.

Re: top side tank

The problem I foresee is spillage when refueling. In a conventional boat, any spill can be contained easily. Not so when the tank is on the outer corner of a pontoon boat. I had spillage issues when refueling my built in tank from portable containers. I started using a cheap Super Siphon when refueling. No more spillage.

No, you don't have to remove the tank for refueling. Just be careful about spillage.

And no silicon is required on the bolts when mounting on a pontoon boat unless you have a wood transom insert. As a previous poster said, you should use 3M if sealing is required.

I like this idea simply for the fact of not seeing a fuel tank but great axcess.

The one question I have with this is the size of tank (27 gal). Do you have any balance issues?

My appoligy if anyone consides this post a thread thief.

Re: top side tank

size 29.25"Lx19.00"Wx12.25"H

just right under the seat in front of the console. i had it on the stern, when i went to the 140 hp motor i moved the tank to counter the addition 100lbs of weight the motor would add to the stern. then just left several breathing holes. access to tank, electronics, and forward battery.
