I have an older (1990) 24' Lowe barge that came from the factory with a Johnson 40 hp on it. Last year I bought and new Yamaha 50 2 stroke and had it installed at the dealer. I had never given top speed much thought until joining this forum so now I'm asking what everyone things my top speed should be. I'm guessing my top speed is something like 12-14 mph.

Furniture is all wooden based so it's heavy. Currently restoring the boat and adding ALL new furniture with plastic bases.

that speed sounds about right, maybe 15-16 max, what rpm is your motor running? you can not achieve top speed unless you are within your wot range

Get us your prop size, lightly loaded wot rpm and gps speed. Some cellc have a gps app.
I think 15 to 17 is possible with a slim chance for 19.

That is a large, heavy boat. I had a 2000 24 footer that made 17 with just me on it. I suspect you will see less than that. It will bog like an SOB with a load of people and expect to run 10 to 12.

I think a pontoon is a tough assignment for a motor with a 1.85 gear ratio.
You may end up with a 8" pitch.A 4 blade pontoon dedicated prop should do best.
23.6" pontoon 3265 all up weight, 50hp with a 2.67 ratio uses a 13" prop at 19.5 mph. 5375 rpm.

I have the boat drydocked now being restored. Plan to start putting furniture in this weekend and then service the engine. I will check on the prop but it sounds like it's running as expected. Agreed the boat is really heavy but maybe with my replacment plastic base seats and clean toons I can pick up 1 mph. :)

Thanks for all the input!

We went from a blown jet boat (about 70mph) to a 75hp pontoon and 24.5mph. It takes a while to get used to cruising instead of flying. I could have dropped another $50,000 or so and bought an Avenger or Cheeta deck boat and had the speed and floor space, but at some time reality had to set in. The only advise I've offered to people buying a new 'toon was get the biggest engine available for your transom, you can always back off the throttle, but once you've committed to an engine, that's it.

Good Luck.
