Torque flywheel/coupler

Hi<br />Im replacing my merc 140, and my new engine has a newer style coupler, my manual says torque flywheel/coupler to 65, but I was wondering if it is the same on the new coupler( on a plate with three hole in it) the flywheel has six holes outside, is it the same where I fasten it?<br />Regards<br />Affa

affa<br /> dude that motor is gonna drive ya bonkers <br /> the flywheel bolt torque is about 65-75 ft pounds. the 3/8 bolts that hold the coupler on torqe to 35 ft pounds or so .my manual is not here but that is about the correct deals. the original couple bolted to the flywheel with the crank/flywheel bolts.<br /> good luck and keep posting

OK <br />Thankyou Rodbolt!<br />Im still having fun with this project, and with all the good help I get from you, I think it will be Ok in the end!<br />You dont happen to know about 2 wires coming out of the delco remy hei distributor,I guess they have to be put where my coil used to be. tach/cut out switch, there where suppose to come an instruction with the engine, but it didnt<br />This new engine is a 2002 mod.<br />Thanks again<br />Affa

hello<br /> dude on this one you will either have to give a ign system type or post me a picture. HEI was never used in marine. EST was and several versions of a distributorless were as well as one version(possiblymore) of a thunderbolt system. the normal for the 2002 model year is a simple EST by delco. used an external ign coil a control module that did all ign timing functions such as advance and is very reliable.<br /> is this a new crate motor or a used motor that was shipped to you?<br /> good luck and keep posting

Hi again <br />There is a distributor and a coil and it is a delco remy, there is a connection from the distributor to the coil, and from the coil it comes 2 wires that I dont know where should be, one is a bit thicker then the other<br />Regards<br />Affa

affa<br /> you have a delco EST ign. I dont have my diagram to tell you how to wire the cut out switch but your going to have to make a harness for it or use your old dist and coil assy.<br /> the EST works very well and is similar to the HEI but uses an external coil and an electronically control ign advance. HEI used springs and weights.<br /> the two wires coming out of the coil that are cut off are 12v positive from the ign terminal on the keyswitch and the other is tach lead.<br /> the 12v positive is the lead closest to the senter of the coil. the tach lead is the lead to the outside edge.. to set the timing requires a special jumper lead assy to shunt the timing advance. that function is the side of the dist with nothing plugged in it. that is also where the harness for the shift interrupt switch goes.<br /> if you decide to use the EST I will help you figgure out the wires. I will need a close up shot of your current shift interrupt plate and wiring harness as well as an update on what year this is.<br /> good luck and keep posting

Thanks alot Rodbolt!<br />I think Id like to use this distributor if I can.<br />My cut-off switch is on a later style shift plate 86 mod. and there was a wire that goes to the old coil there, do you mean I have to make a contact on the new distributor, or can I use the wires on the coil for the cut-out?<br />Regards<br />Affa

hello<br /> no I mean you have to have the harness part that clips into the EST dist module then you have to wire it into your switchplate assy. that is why I have to see it, I cant tell just by a year. my brain is old and almost non-functioning anymore. send me some good shots of your harness and switch plate. or you can buy a late model service manual that covers the 3.0 with an EST and wire it in. it is just a method to short out the module to allow the shift clutch to disengage from the gear.
