Torque shift prop problem...

I have been running one for about a year now and would not trade it for anything, unbelivable hole shot with the same top speed. However i did have something happen this last weekend that i am trying to figure out and need some help...
Normally the shifting is very controllable with the trim and boat speed. It will not shift until the rpm’s get to about 4000. So when we are wakeboarding or skiing, the prop never shifts. just when we want to cruse, i run it up to 4200 & start to trim and then the prop will shift.

THis weekend however, after doing several ski and wakeboard run's i had a strange thing happen, While pulling someone, the rpms would start to drop and consequently the boat would start to very slowly drop off plane. Kind like the motor started to bog. This happened twice, once with a skier @ about 25mph and again with a wakeboarder @ about 18mph. Both times starts out fine, then all of the sudden it would start to bog...

Initially I thought it was the outdrive (OMC 800) or motor so I slowly drove it back to the ramp.
Got home, checked things out and it all seems ok. So, I got to thinking that since the rpm's dropped a lot more than our speed it would seem that it was not related to the motor or outdrive. Then I thought about the prop, it must be shifting… But WHY? It has never tried to shift at such slow speeds before…

Other related info...
I lubed the prop internals for the first time since I got it. The instructions say not to, but it would seem that the wear on the moving parts would be bad, so a put a fine coat of lithium on the contact parts.

Also the heavy rains this year have created quite a debris field, could contact with a large piece of drift would induce a shift?

I know this is long, so thanks for reading…

Did the problem start before or after you lubed it?

After. However we did have 4 ski/board runs on the lubed prop prior to the problem.

I dont mess with those things but I would look at the springs or whatever holds the shift cams in place. It might be that something is getting weak and is letting it shift sooner.

Did you call Land & Sea to see what they thought?

Remove the lubrication. The prop is designed to shift when it developes enough force to move. You lowered the amount of force required to move everything, therefore it shifts sooner.

That's your problem. There is no such thing as a coincidence. :D

Take it back apart, thoroughly clean the parts that are supposed to be dry, then reassemble. You could leave it lubed and adjust the springs, but then once the lube wears away it will begin to not shift as the resistance builds back to the stock level.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the thoughts guys...

As for the lube causing the early shift - Then why did it not start until later in the day. If the lube was the cause it should have happened from the start.
Also, i figured the reason for the "no Lube" statement was because of the EPA.

Bondo, am i correct in saying that you lube yours (prop that is...)?

Also what cam profiles are you all using?
