Torque values

I am reading through my manual for the torque values for my exhaust manifold on a 1989 Force 150. My book says that it is 70 in/lbs. seems real light, almost hand tight. Is this correct? Can I put a bit more torque (20-30 ft/lbs) and be safe? Can I use Anti-seize on the threads also?

I just wanted to check before I create more work for myself.....Again.

Re: Torque values

70 in /lb is 6 ft/lb so I dont think going up to 30 ft /lb is a good idea ..its based on the size of the bolt and the material it goes into which in this case is aluminium..30 ft lb will no doubt strip the aluminium then you are into hellicoils ...fun ....check torque when hot..... ps its an exhaust chamber cover not a manifold

70inch pounds is what it called for. Any more and like fukawi said you will strip your aluminum threads. One thing though is recheck torque every year. Sometimes the bolts can work there way back out and fall into the lower cowl causing eater leaks and exhaust leak. I have had this happen on a 89 125 force and also on a 94 120 force by merc. Easy fix if you catch it in time.

Thats what I have happening now. I will go to 70in/lbs then. It just seemed way to loose, even for the aluminum block. I was kinda thinking it may be a typo.

Re: Torque values

iCam NO WAY. You would go 20-25 ft lbs on head bolts when the reccomended torque is 18.something. Not with those tiny little exhaust manifold bolts..you'll end up with a headache and a lot more work repairing and drilling out broken bolts or helicoiling.

Re: Torque values

I checked my clymer manual just yo be sure and 70 inch pounds is what it calls for on you 150guys force. Any tighter and hello even bigger headaches. I know it feels finger tight but unless you want bigger problems then 70 inch pounds is what it needs to be. Good luck.
