I am putting a new water pump on my Merc. 40 hp (1982) and the manual says that I need to torque the bolts to 30 in-lb. I dont have a in-lb torque wrench and am wondering if there is a way around this. Can I get it to tight? I realize that I could break the plastic housing but will it work correctly if I dont use a torque wrench ?

They publish torque values for everything. I've never seen anybody use a torque wrench on a water pump. Evenly snug and not too much to distort the plastic.

Bayou, Inch pounds are 12 times foot pounds. That is 30 inch pounds is about 3 foot pounds.

Of course you really do not need a torque wrench. Use a socket wrench, and one hand only (so you are not too strong), put your hand near the pivot point of the wrench and use just your wrist muscles to tighten. It doesn't need to be too tight.

This is the same method I use to tighten american car's valve cover bolts-they break every time if you are not careful.

Chris1956 I believe you meant an inch-pound is 1/12 of a foot-pound.

Just use the 'diver method'. Tighten the nuts/bolts up until they go 'soft', then back a 1/4 of a turn :D

Seriously, I use a 1/4" drive rachet and hold it about half way and then just 'snug' them up. Too tight and the plastic housing will distort.

Chris.........
